The Knoll company was founded in 1938. Founded by Hans Knoll and later joined by his wife Florence, it introduced Americans to European design by publishing the creations of brilliant designers such as Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer. If the ingenious choice of designers is the origin of Knoll‘s success, its visual identity, its commercial methods and its advertising have greatly contributed to its rise.

Through this beautiful book, Eric Larrabee and Massimo Vignelli have deciphered this design phenomenon! They looked at the reasons for the company’s success, its history and its connection with European designers. The book is a collaborative effort, with Richard Saul Wurman and Christine Rae working on the graphic identity and Sarah Williams on the editing. They also called on Knoll to ensure that their knowledge of the company was accurate.
