Le Corbusier was born in Switzerland and became a French citizen in 1930. Around 1912, Le Corbusier built the Villa Jeanneret-Perret, known as the ‘Maison Blanche’. It was at this time that he became an architect in his own right. From 1920 onwards, he worked on the housing unit, a concept that integrates the essential collective spaces in the same building: daycare, school, shop, library, laundry, swimming pool and meeting places. It was not until 1925 that Le Corbusier began to work on furniture and designed his famous LC4 chaise longue.

During the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, Le Corbusier had to supply the event with furniture. It was on this occasion that he designed, with Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, his only collection of design furniture. In addition to the LC4 chaise longue, they produced a complete series that included

  • The high comfort armchairs: LC2 and LC3
  • The chaise longue: LC4
  • The sofa: LC5
  • The table: LC6
  • The coat rack: LC17

But it was in 1929 that Le Corbusier’s LC4 chair, initially designed for the Villa d’Avray, was to be a huge success when presented at the Salon d’Automne in Paris. “La Machine àrepos” as its designers amused themselves by calling it, is a continuously adjustable chaise longue that perfectly follows the shape of the human body. Its design is based on a steel structure with a perfect line and a leather mattress. Today, this chair is available in a version and LC4 Villa Church by Cassina, but it is still possible to find a original model !
